Remember watching America’s Next Top Model and being completely in awe of Tyra Banks and her effervescent personality?! Well, the journey to that seat wasn’t that easy for Tyra who was often demarcated for her size four figure and dark skin color. Tyra Banks struggled but never gave up making the greatest model of the 90s! Here are her struggles, which make her the greatest of all!
#1 Due to her size, she wasn’t selected for fashion shows
When she entered the industry, she was a size 4 and had huge breasts giving her an overall curvy appearance. Over the decade, she was always told that she is too big for the runways.
#2 She was a pioneer for African-American models
She was the first African-American to be featured on the cover of GQ and Sports Illustrated. And was also the first African – American woman to be featured in a Victoria’s Secret catalogue.
#3 Tyra was the first African –American model to wear the Victoria’s Secret fantasy bra
This is something definitely to be boasted about because rarely any model gets this chance.
#4 She was never considered a serious model for Vogue
“You could see she would go on to do something else, with her big tits and incredibly thin ankles, she was never cut out to be a serious model.”
– Grace Coddington, Creative Director, Vogue US
This is something very harsh to write about someone’s body. Tyra has proved everyone wrong including Grace. Tyra featured on editorials of the Vogue and also on covers of Teen Vogue but never made it to the cover of Vogue America. However, she was on covers of Vogue magazines around the world.
#5 Tyra gave the America’s Next Top Model show
When Tyra hit a low she didn’t escape the difficulty but spend her time in finding and grooming models that would become the models of the next generation.
#6 She stood up for Kendall and Gigi and is an active campaigner of body positivity
She not only addressed the pressure of looking perfect in front of the camera but also about unhealthy standards the industry has set and which need to be changed.
